Copeland Borough Council's Sustainability Team win BECBC Award

Published: 27/01/2022

Congratulations are in order for our Sustainability Team, which has been awarded ‘Sustainability Innovator of the Year’ in the BECBC Shadow Board Awards.

The team has been recognised for promoting sustainable practices within the borough through the Copeland People’s Panel on Climate Change, delivered as part of the Zero Carbon Cumbria Programme.

This programme has been made possible thanks to a £2.5 million grant from the National Lottery Climate Action Fund, which is supporting a Cumbria-wide programme of community-led action on climate change

The Copeland People’s Panel on Climate Change, commissioned by the council and facilitated by Shared Future CIC, is a citizens’ jury that made recommendations about what needs to be done in our homes, businesses and local area to respond to climate change.

Through a 12-week process, the panel heard from experts and deliberated local climate issues before creating a set of recommendations to put forward to a range of stakeholders in Copeland, including the Council.

Rob Ward, the Head of Nuclear, Energy and Sustainability for Copeland, said: “It is great that BECBC Shadow Board has recognised the importance of empowering residents to have their say on climate action – participation is a fundamental principle of our approach to making Copeland a sustainable place.”

He added: “Real thanks go to Priya Hira, who led the project, and of course to the 30 members of the Copeland People’s Panel, whose valuable recommendations are already shaping our climate plans.”

Councillor Andy Pratt, the Portfolio Holder for Environment and Inclusive Communities, said: “Implementing policies to tackle climate change is an essential step in Copeland’s journey to becoming a carbon neutral borough. It’s fantastic that our Sustainability Team has been recognised for their great efforts”.
