Colourful choice at Market Hall

Published: 11/08/2015

Copeland Council is seeking the public’s help in deciding the colour of an iconic building in Whitehaven.

Work is continuing on the Market Hall, ready for council staff to move there in the autumn. The reception and customer services department will be there, as well as some other staff. Many other staff will remain in the Copeland Centre.

The revamped hall will also include a public toilet on the side of the grade ll listed building.

As well as major changes inside the building to give customers a pleasant and accessible reception area, the outside will be renovated and repainted – and this is where the council wants residents’ help.

Copeland’s portfolio holder for economic growth, Lena Hogg, said: “We plan to paint this well-loved building in a ‘heritage’ colour – similar to the palette used on the many other late Victorian and Georgian town centre buildings. We want the public to choose the colour, from a shortlist suggested by a heritage expert.”

Coun Hogg added: “This is an iconic building in Whitehaven and we value the community’s input on what it should look like. We take a pride in the borough’s past and buildings like this should be enhanced and preserved whenever possible. I think this attractive building is liked by locals and I’m hoping they will appreciate the chance to influence its final appearance.”

The colours the public can choose from are: honeysuckle cream, oatmeal, crystal blue, sea foam and clover pink.
