ENERGY

It was generally agreed that we should be exploiting our renewable energy potential (Q93). It was pointed out that the discussion in the Issues Report should make reference to energy crops, a potential opportunity for farm diversification.

The County Council stated it may formalise areas of search in the Structure Plan. It was suggested that any policies should be positively worded and criteria based which should include amendment of both landscape and visual impact.

It was also stated that it was not appropriate for the Issues Report to say that 'only wind energy is viable'.

There was also a general feeling amongst respondents that it was reasonable to accept some loss to environmental quality or public amenity in seeking to provide energy from renewable sources (Q94). It was stressed that careful planning and consideration was needed in siting. One respondent disagreed expressing that wind turbines are an eyesore and inefficient.

Responses to whether the Local Plan should include policies relating to nuclear power generation were mixed (Q95). Of those that agreed it was mentioned that it should allow for a new nuclear power station to replace Calder Hall. Opposing views included those that believed that Copeland already carries enough nuclear burden and should not support any new build.

Similarly, there was no clear response with regard to the siting of a new nuclear power station (Q96). As would be expected some supported the notion those who did not were very much opposed.

Other energy conservation issues which felt should be included (Q97):

      • Energy conservation

      • Reference should be made to the need to encourage the use of energy
        efficient technologies

      • Solar gain and eco renovation

      • Solar panels and photo-voltaic cells.

      • It is seen as essential that the Local Plan take into consideration
        emerging targets for renewable energy.
