The Vertical Hour

Nadia Blye, an American war reporter turned Yale professor, has seen the horror of war up close. Advising President Bush as an advocate for ‘humane intervention’ in Iraq, she’s more than used to defending her divisive opinions. But one weekend in the Shropshire countryside she meets Oliver. He’s caustic, vehemently liberal, ferociously intelligent, an inveterate womaniser and the father of her boyfriend. He can’t resist taking her to task and the two soon lock horns in an intellectual debate that will have far-reaching consequences for them all. Personal philosophies are pitted against global politics, idealism clashes with realism and cynicism challenges moral obligation. But who is right? This gripping and moving play, by one of Britain’s finest playwrights, will challenge, enthral and pitch you into passionate discussion all the way home.
