Environmental Cleansing

The Council is responsible for cleaning the majority of adopted roads and streets within towns and villages, emptying litter and dog bins and removing fly tipping from Council owned land. We also clean the four amenity beaches within Copeland during the Summer bathing season and are responsible for cleaning the Council's public conveniences.

Recycling

In the Government's Waste Strategy 2000 all local authorities have been set statutory targets for household waste recycling. In Copeland the targets were to recycle or compost 10% of household waste by April 2004 - which, thanks to your efforts, has been not only met but exceeded - and 18% by April 2006. Most waste is buried in landfills causing long-term management problems and also wasting valuable natural resources and raw materials.

In Copeland around 30,000 tonnes of household waste is produced each year. This means to meet the targets we must aim to recycle 5400 tonnes of waste by April 2006. The Council would like you to help by:

We would like to encourage residents to take pride in the environment, Copeland is a beautiful part of the world we are working to keep it that way and we want to do our bit to preserve the earth for future generations.
