Archives and local studies books relating to all aspects of West Cumbrian life, from the 12th century to the present day, are available for study (not loan) free of charge. Research facilities prove useful for pupils and students undertaking home work or college projects with a local or historic focus and advice is available. Experienced and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer guidance.

Topics/areas we can help with:

Old maps, life in the local area, West Cumbria in Victorian times, transport, local industry including mining and shipping, old newspapers, family history sources, poor law and workhouses, photographs and illustrations.

Individual or family learning can offer youngsters interesting learning opportunities and the chance to be history detectives.


Tues, Thurs, Fri 9.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5pm

Weds 9.30am-12:30pm and 1.30pm-7pm

Alternate Saturdays 9am-1pm
