North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust has received positive feedback from those treated on its wards in the latest national inpatient survey published by the Care Quality Commission.
Between September 2014 and January 2015, a questionnaire was sent to 850 recent inpatients at the West Cumberland Hospital and Cumberland Infirmary, and 426 responses were received. People were asked a wide range of questions covering topics including waiting times, privacy and dignity, cleanliness, the standard of care, staffing levels and discharge arrangements. The responses were then converted into scores out of 10 for each question, and then benchmarked against other trusts nationally.
North Cumbria was found to be “about the same” as most other trusts nationally on the vast majority of questions, and received a score of 8 out of 10 when patients were asked to give their overall view of inpatient services – up from 7.8 out of 10 the previous year.
Two areas where the Trust scored better than the majority of others were on delays to discharge; and not feeling threatened by other patients or visitors, where an almost perfect score of 9.9 out of 10 was achieved. Other high scores of note were 9.5 for not having to share a sleeping area, such as a room or bay, with patients of the opposite sex; 9.1 for receiving an explanation they could understand from the anaesthetist or another member of staff about how they would be put to sleep or their pain controlled; and 9.0 for nurses not talking in front of them, as if they weren't there.
North Cumbria only scored worse than the majority of other trusts on one question, regarding patients being given enough privacy when being examined or treated, where the Trust scored 9.1 out of 10.
Executive director for nursing and midwifery Gail Naylor said: “We would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete this questionnaire – feedback of this kind is vital to the Trust to enable us to continue making the improvements needed to give our patients the best possible care.
“These results give us many reasons to be positive but also highlight some areas we need to focus on to ensure every patient receives the standard of safe, responsive care they deserve.”
