Distington, in north Copeland, is set to benefit from the Big Local programme, and receive funding of £1m to help residents improve their local area.

The funding will be delivered over the next ten years, along with support, training and networking opportunities to help residents make their community a better place to live.

The scheme is completely resident led, which means that it will be entirely up to the people living in the area to use the £1m on the things that matter to them, and the projects and services that will have the biggest impact on the needs they identify.

Councillor Elaine Woodburn, the Leader of Copeland Borough Council said, “What a fantastic Christmas present this is for the people of Distington and Copeland more widely. Being selected as a Big Local area will provide a massive boost for the community, and the funding will help Distington residents to make real and lasting improvements to their village.

“It is particularly important to note that this isn’t money coming to the council or to any other public body to decide how to be spent. Instead it will go to the people who know best what will improve their community – the people that live there. In recent months we have seen a series of fantastic events and schemes developed in communities, by the community, and this large and sustained investment will help Distington to do just the same.”

Distington ward councillor, John Bowman, said, “This is an excellent Christmas bonus for the people of Distington, who I am sure will come up with some impressive and impactful ideas for how best to invest this money in the community.

“Distington is a unique and welcoming village, with a strong community spirit. This investment will help ensure that work that is already taking place and be expanded on and developed and will bring together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals and groups who want to make a positive and lasting difference to Distington.

The Big Local scheme was launched in July 2010 and is supporting 150 small urban and rural communities across the country, particularly those who have not been successful in securing funding and resources in the past.

Work will kick off in the New Year, with a series of meetings between interested parties and representatives of Big Local.
