On May 22 2014 there will be a referendum on whether there should be an elected Mayor in Copeland. The electorate will be asked how they would like Copeland Borough council to be run: (1) By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors (this is how the council is run now) Or (2) By a mayor who is elected by voters (this would be a change from how the council is run now). If people vote for the second option there will be a mayoral election on October 16. We will be putting more information on this website and in the media as we near the referendum. Here is the official notice of the referendum. The referendum is on the same day as the European elections. You can find out more about those here.
